SILTERRA – A GREENER EARTH FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Kulim, Kedah (October 19, 2004) – Promoting grassroots’ awareness and involvement in a green environment – this was the objective of SilTerra Malaysia Sdn Bhd (SilTerra) in organising an environmental based Colouring Competition for children and a Tree Planting event as part of the company’s Environmental Day celebrations.

The event, themed “A Greener Earth for Future Generations,” was initiated to help raise awareness about the environment. YB Encik Sazmi Miah, Parliamentary Secretary, officiated the Environmental Day on behalf of YB Dato' Sri Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment.

Bruce Gray, President/COO and acting CEO of SilTerra said, “We believe that everyone, including the corporations, their employees and children, should be encouraged to play a role in helping to keep the environment clean and green.

“At SilTerra, we have established an environmental policy for our company which clearly states our commitment in this area.”

SilTerra has also invested over RM8 million this year in enterprise-wide Environmental Management Systems upgrades and has received the ISO 14001 re-certification with zero non-compliance.

The company has also received a notable achievement award in the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Awards last year. These efforts bear testimony to the special emphasis that SilTerra places on protecting the environment.

“Our employees too have been very proactive in helping create awareness about the environment and have in the past been involved in the past in many community related projects,” added Gray.

SilTerra, he went on to explain, fully supports its employees’ environmental conservation activities involving community related projects like recycling, car pooling and other initiatives for the benefit of the environment.

“At SilTerra, we not only encourage but also help facilitate these initiatives wherever we can. The tree planting event today is a prime example of our employees’ initiative and drive towards achieving a greener environment. We are extremely proud to have such environmentally conscious and responsible employees as part of the SilTerra family,” he said.

Close to 200 saplings were planted by SilTerra’s employees in and around the company’s plant and offices in Kulim. The first one was planted by YB Encik Sazmi.

For the Colouring Competition, 50 children from five primary schools around the Kulim district, namely, Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Hi-Tech, SJK (C) Kelang Lama, SJK (T) Ladang Bukit Mertajam, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Ular and Sekolah Kebangsaan Tunku Abdul Malik, participated.

“We hope our effort will help make children aware of the fact that we should not take the environment for granted. Every small effort made now is significant in conserving the environment and ensuring a better quality of life in the future,” concluded Gray.
