Press Statement For Immediate Release
Kulim, Kedah, December 8, 2008 – Silterra Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s leading wafer foundry, is principally owned by the Government of Malaysia to anchor the country’s semiconductor eco-system. Contrary to rumours currently propagated by various quarters, there are no plans as such to close down Silterra’s wafer fabrication plant or to discontinue the current business.
As a key strategic asset in the development of Malaysia’s semiconductor industry, Silterra’s facility in Kulim will continue to operate into the foreseeable future. Silterra has a strong position in various segments of the consumer electronics and communications space, and will leverage on that advantage while continuously enhancing its capacity and technology portfolio to stay competitive.
Silterra’s business strength is reflected in its current asset utilization. The company is presently enjoying a high capacity utilization rate in excess of 90% which is above the current industry trend, where many fabs are running at or below 70% utilization. The outlook for 2009, while challenging, remains positive as we engage with existing and potential customers from diversified market segments and geographies. Silterra will continue to meet its commitments and obligations to customers and other stakeholders.
