SilTerra and Symetrix announce a major collaboration to offer ferroelectric memory as a standard offering for the first time at a foundry
Kulim, Malaysia, & Colorado Springs, CO, USA, December 7, 2011 - SilTerra Malaysia Sdn Bhd (SilTerra) and Symetrix Corporation (Symetrix) today announced a major collaboration to offer non-volatile ferroelectric random access memory (FeRAM) as a standard memory offering. FeRAM is a well established technology offered by several independent device manufacturers to serve many applications such as smart cards, smart meters and automotive controllers. Now, with FeRAM becoming a standard offering at SilTerra, the design community at-large will be able to incorporate the unique features of this technology in their designs. These features include the ability to write data extremely fast, extremely often and at very low power, typically greater that 1,000 times better than embedded flash memory. The SilTerra and Symetrix collaboration will bring new products to the familiar applications of FeRAM and enable newer, smarter products. For example, with the rush of new applications for wireless sensor networks, devices need to handle high data rates over long deployed lifetimes, with the ability to update the device firmware remotely. Further, powering the chip only with energy that may be harvested locally from solar, vibration or radio frequency sources enables autonomous control and collection of information. FeRAM is uniquely suited to realize all these demands.
Symetrix will supply the process technology and will work jointly with SilTerra to qualify the FeRAM process on SilTerra’s CL180LP and CL130LP low power logic processes. Because the incorporation of FeRAM does not alter the underlying CMOS characteristics all of the standard design libraries for this process will be available. A library of silicon-proven FeRAM memory macros will also be developed for use by Silterra customers.
