The rapid pace of change, be it for Industry 4.0, 5G, Big Data, AI or the Cloud, is inevitable. With change being the only constant thing, and the only certainty being uncertainty, the need for transformation among businesses remains vital for them to stay relevant in the future. This was the big picture introduced at The Edge SME Forum 2019, themed “The Path to Transformation”. Held on the 3rd August 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, this forum brought together 500 participants from small-and-medium enterprises to network and gain insights from thought leaders that were pioneering transformation in the country.
In his speech entitled “Transformation on a Shoestring Budget”, the CEO of SilTerra, Mr. Firdaus Abdullah, shared SilTerra’s strategy in its transformation journey which focused on advancing its core technologies into new domains such as silicon photonics, biophotonics, MEMS and Advanced Power to tap into the potential of future connected technologies in the areas of healthcare, life sciences, mobility and connectivity. As a wholly-owned national asset, despite being severely underinvested when compared to its peers, Mr. Firdaus highlighted SilTerra’s success and resilience in remaining relevant in the semiconductor industry through its technology and engineering capabilities.
Mr. Firdaus also touched on SilTerra’s mission to build local ecosystems of innovation through its initiatives such as the Semiconductors in Life Sciences Symposium held in September 2018 and more recently the Technologies in Mobility Symposium which it hosted in March 2019. He pointed out that although 99% of SilTera’s customers were foreign companies, he is now looking forward to having more Malaysian companies come forward to work together with SilTerra in developing next-generation Malaysian-made products.
The half-day forum also included insights from industry thought leaders on matters related to the disruption of services or product offerings in the form of software, the importance of effective implementation of big data, the implication in the rise of 5G and the importance of humanizing any business solution with a human-centric story.
