Brazil's Chipus Partners with Second Foundry

LONDON - Chipus Microelecrtronics SA, a Brazilian startup licensor of analog and mixed-signal circuit designs, has said it has begun designing a library of low-voltage, low-power analog IP cores for implementation on a 0.18-micron CMOS process used by foundry SilTerra Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

A partnership has evolved between the two companies after executives from Chipus (Florianopolis, Brazil) visited SilTerra's foundry in Malaysia in July, Chipus said. "This partnership builds on a mutual attraction between both players," said Paulo Dal Fabbro, CTO of Chipus, in a statement. He added: "SilTerra's process came in handy for our low-power requirements and their wafer price is very competitive. Furthermore, they provide a very good support to partners and customers."

Chipus said it plans to provide power management and data converter circuits for use by foundry customers on both the 0.18-micron and 0.13-micron nodes at SilTerra.

A second result of the partnership is that Chipus has agreed to help SilTerra stage a sales roadshow in Brazil in September. Chipus is co-organizing the roadshow, which will comprise events in Sao Paulo on Sept. 12 and in Florianopolis, on Sept. 14.

The creation of the partnership with SilTerra follows an announcement in May that power management circuits are available for use on a 0.15-micron process at LFoundry GmbH (Landshut, Germany).

MaxLinear Qualifies SilTerra for the Manufacture of High-Volume TV Tuner & Demodulator SoC Products

Company now has multiple foundry sources for its low power, high performance CMOS RF & Mixed-Signal IC products

The qualification of SilTerra as a CMOS semiconductor wafer foundry gives MaxLinear a second source for the manufacture of its high-volume tuners to support customer demand in television, cable TV and mobile TV applications.

The silicon tuner market size for the company's main markets has been estimated at $7.6 billion in 2008 by iSuppli. Several trends are causing this market to grow, including a worldwide transition to digital television, emerging demand for multi-tuner and portable (PC, automobile, mobile phone) TV, and a growing mandate to lower the power consumption of all entertainment systems.

Centre to offer circuit prototyping services

GEORGE TOWN: Usains Infotech Sdn Bhd's (UISB) The Centre of Excellence for Electrical and Electronics (CoE) is now able to provide integrated circuit (IC) prototyping services for electronics companies and to train IC design graduate students on prototyping, following two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed between UISB and SilTerra Malaysia Sdn Bhd and MIMOS Bhd.

Under the MoUs, Northern Corridor Implementation Agency (NCIA) chief executive Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak said CoE, established by NCIA, could now make use of the Multi-Project-Wafer Services and Failure Analysis Services of SilTerra and MIMOS to provide total programme management from IC design to prototyping for customers and to train graduate students in IC design.

"This is in line with the country's objective stated under the New Economic Model to aid the electronics sector climb up the value chain," he added.

He was speaking after witnessing USAINS group managing director Datuk Dr Gan Ee Kiang signing the MoUs with SilTerra chief executive officer Dr Kamarulzaman Mohamd Zin and MIMOS chief operating officer Abd Aziz Abd Kadir.

Redza said besides providing prototyping services, CoE could also work with SilTerra and MIMOS to launch turnkey IC design services for local and foreign customers, which would bring about benefits for the economy.

"They can also work together to take on bigger IC design projects," he added.

Meanwhile, USAINS group managing director Datul Dr Gan Ee Kiang said with the MoUs, CoE was now able to grow its customer base.

"Previously we were only able to provide IC design services. Now we can make use of the Multi-Project-Wafer Services and Failure Analysis Services of SilTerra and MIMOS to double our clientele.

"Presently we are working with five electronics manufacturing companies specialising in IC design. We believe this figure could easily double soon," he said.

Gan added that there were currently 50 graduate students receiving training at the CoE to fulfil the requirements of the master's degree programme with Universiti Sains Malaysia on IC design.

"This collaboration with SilTerra and MIMOS will enable the students to obtain training on prototyping," he said.

Meanwhile, Kamarulzaman said SilTerra was monitoring the crisis in Japan closely, as the group imported raw materials such as wafer and electronic parts and components from Japan.

Ilitek controls over 50% share of China's handset TFT LCD driver IC market

LCD driver IC design house ILI Technology (Ilitek) currently controls more than half of China's market for handset TFT LCD driver ICs, and expects shipments to continue to increase as the market expands, according to company president Luen Wei.

"Ilitek shipped 330 million LCD driver ICs to the handset market in China in 2010, accounting for a 57% share in the segment. About 53% out of the China-bound shipments were for local brand vendors and the remaining 47% for white-box handset makers, Wei indicated." Additionally, Ilitek also shipped 92 million LCD driver ICs for handset vendors outside China in 2010, the company added.

"Currently, the company is cooperating with SilTerra, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing company (TSMC) and Maxchip Electronics for the production of 8-inch wafers. In order to fulfill demand from the smartphone sector, the company has also begun outsourcing wafer production to Powerchip Technology using a 12-inch manufacturing process, Wei said."

Ilitek is also cooperating with Chipbond Technology to jointly build up packaging and testing capacity for 12-inch LCD driver ICs aiming to ensure wafer supply and lower testing costs."Ilitek has also begun shipping touch ICs for tablet PCs, which should account for 10% of total revenues in 2011 and serve as a major growth driver, Wei asserted. Additionally, the company also plans to launch power management ICs in the second half of 2011."
