SilTerra at the Annual Photonics Event Hosted by LUX Photonics Consortium, Featuring EPIC

The LUX Photonics Consortium hosted a delegation of companies from the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) in Singapore from 21st to 24th October 2019.  This is an annual event between LUX and EPIC members to foster closer collaboration and cooperation in this rapidly developing industry.  Last year, LUX members visited fellow member companies in Berlin during March 2018, hosted by EPIC there.

During the 4-day visit, a total of 30 organisations shared presentations about their companies and technologies, and networked over lunch and dinner to seek opportunities for collaboration.  There was a wide range of areas covered in photonics technologies ranging from portable Raman spectroscopy, microsphere microscopes, femto- and high-powered lasers systems to light carpets for automobiles, optoelectronics, accelerated germination of seeds and ultra-high speed data communications, among others.

SilTerra’s presentation was delivered by Senior Director of Technology Development, Venkatesh Madhaven. He highlighted SilTerra’s work with customers in its Kulim facility on CMOS and the reason SilTerra decided to venture into More-than-Moore technologies such as Silicon Photonics and MEMS.  In his 10-min presentation, he also described Silterra’s capabilities in developing bio-photonics chips for DNA Sequencing, its success in developing a monolithic CMOS chip integrated with ultrasonic transducer (pMUT) and its work in micro-mirrors.

The delegation which included LUX and EPIC members were also invited to hear from the Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF), Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB), Agency for Science, Technology and Research ( A*STAR), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) about their areas of research.  The delegates also spent  a day at the “Industry Transformation Asia-Pacific” (ITAP) conference at the Singapore EXPO to visit the booths of other LUX and EPIC members.

The LUX Consortium was formed by the Singapore NRF and led by NTU with a view of serving as a catalyst and networking platform for the global photonics industry to enable closer collaboration between research institutions and the industry.  To date there are over 50 members from countries around Asia including Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia, among others.  SilTerra has been a member since 2018.
